Understanding International Development Cooperation

Format
Paperback, 372 pages

This study on international development cooperation is a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of aid, including the impact of the end of the Cold War. It reviews the motives, goals, strategies and practices of donor agencies and NGOs in North and South; examines emergency relief and humanitarian assistance as new modes of intervention; analyses the international debates on aid impact and effectiveness; and shows that aid has proved more valuable in recipient countries with coherent development policies and strong political institutions. The authors argue that there is no better alternative to taxpayer-financed aid as a mechanism for promoting greater equality. They present ideas for making aid more effective and efficient, and examine new modes of financing development and of international cooperation.

Reviews

'A comprehensive and provocative primer on the history, current status and prospects of foreign aid and the relationships surrounding it. Its Danish origins generate a useful and different perspective to analyses and debates traditionally dominated by larger aid donors.' - Gerry Helleiner, Distinguished Research Fellow, Munk Centre for International Studies, University of Toronto 'This book demonstrates that achieving a genuine development impact from aid is a huge challenge, but one we need to succeed in facing. It shows that quality matters! Volume matters! And having the right motives matters! This is a call on donors to improve their programmes, rather than spending time on justifying budget cuts. A timely reminder, that commitments must be followed by action.' - Poul Nielson, EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid 'This book offers an excellent introduction and overview to the complex and often changing field of foreign aid. It is clear, comprehensive, balanced and should be read by anyone wanting to begin to understand this important area of international development and foreign policy.' - Carol Lancaster, Director, Masters of Science in Foreign Service, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, and former Deputy Administrator of USAID 'This is an up-to-date intellectual guide through the complex maze of issues and debates on foreign aid and development. It combines scholarship and commitment to produce an indispensable reading for both practitioners and scholars.' - Thandika Mkandawire, UNRISD, Geneva
