Alice's Adventures in Wonderland gets another makeover in a new edition illustrated by Iassen Ghiuselev. Beginning with a gouache painting that combines elements from the entire story into one fantastical scene, Ghiuselev's illustrations continue by alternating seemingly gilded paintings of Alice interacting realistically with Mouse and Duck and Dodo, and burgundy-hued pencil drawings, all of which emphasize the dreamlike qualities of the text. This large-trim (9" x 13"), limited edition includes a bookmark. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Gr 3-6-Carroll's unabridged text is accompanied by abundant illustrations that will draw readers into the tale. In fact, the eye-catching volume-with its pleasing autumn-hued palette, an illustration on almost every spread, and pages that organically merge text with visual images-is designed so that the narrative and artwork propel the story in equal measure. Each chapter is introduced by a colorful full-bleed painting depicting events to come. Copious single- and double-page illustrations and smaller insets, some in full-color and some in monochromatic tones, appear throughout the book, adding detail to the adventure and underscoring its emotional impact. Filled with soft textures and dramatic shadowing, Ingpen's artwork blends realism with whimsy. While Wonderland looks much like the English countryside and the characters have a Victorian air about them, shifting viewpoints and playful perspectives keep the mood fanciful. An endnote about "The Original Alice" and reproductions of Carroll's manuscript are appended. An inviting layout and plentiful artwork make this book a good choice for independent readers who may need a bit of encouragement, as well as for one-on-one sharing with younger children.-Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.
