About the Author

GREGORY POTTIE has been a faculty member of the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department since 1991, serving in vice-chair roles from 1999–2003. Since 2003 he has also served as Associate Dean for Research and Physical Resources of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. From 1997-1999 he was secretary to the board of governors for the IEEE Information Theory Society. In 1998 he was named the faculty researcher of the year for the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Science for his pioneering role in wireless sensor networks. Dr Pottie is a deputy director of the NSF-sponsored science and technology Center for Embedded Networked Sensors and is a co-founder of Sensoria Corporation. WILLIAM KAISER joined the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department in 1994 and there, with Professor Pottie, initiated the first wireless networked microsensor programs with a vision of linking the Internet to the physical world through distributed monitoring. Professor Kaiser served as Electrical Engineering Department Chairman from 1996 through to 2000, He has received the Allied Signal Faculty Award, the Peter Mark Award of the Vacuum Society, the NASA Medal of Exceptional Scientific Achievement, the Arch Colwell Best Paper Award of the Society of Automotive Engineers and two R & D 100 Awards. He is co-founder of Sensoria Corporation.
