Jannie van Heerden holds a Masters degree in Fine Art and a Diploma in Education, Rhodes University, In 1989 Jannie was appointed as Senior Subject Advisor for Arts and Crafts education in the previous Kwazulu Government Service. He learned about Zulu Crafts out of necessity as it was a compulsory subject in Zulu speaking schools. Jannie spent 16 years in the field, specifically with basket weavers learning the craft and also documenting weavers and materials and techniques. He is presently Deputy Chief Education Specialist in the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department, in charge of Visual Arts and Design.
