  • An album of originals (plus one stray Wayne Shorter number), pianist Kelly Brand's The Door is a nice set of contemporary Chicago jazz. This is nightclub jazz at its best, with attention paid to the compositions and the details, a fine set of backing musicians, and an able leader directing the activities. The compositions are never too complex, but never so simplistic as to be predictable. Brand's playing is careful, never quite reaching for the dizzying heights that invite improvisational failure, but also never missing a note. Mari Anne Jayme provides sweet vocals over the top of the affair from time to time, adding a soft layer to the affair. An excellent rhythm section backs up the proceedings, but it's still Brand's piano that remains in the spotlight for the majority of the album. This is a very strong album, no bells and whistles, straight out of a Chicago nightclub. Maybe better for ambient music than for intensive listening, but a fine set regardless. ~ Adam Greenberg
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (p.72) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Solos by Brand, saxophonist/flutist Geof Bradfield and Art Davis on trumpet and flugelhorn are expressive and tastefully underplayed, leaving an appealing feeling in their wake."

JazzTimes (p.135) - "Brand writes polished melodies and subtle harmonies and clever charts that reflect her upbeat attitude toward life."
