Performer Notes
  • The story of rockabilly revolves around all the greats like Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, and Gene Vincent as well as all the weirdos (Hasil Adkins) and worthy also-rans (Ronnie Self) rocking like mad around the fringes. Apart from Wanda Jackson, the women of rockabilly don't get nearly enough attention, and for every 100 compilations of ducktailed men, there's maybe one that might deign to feature the occasional beehived female bopper. There have been a few compilations that featured all female rockabilly artists: Ace's Good Girls Gone Bad from 2004 dug deep for some cool obscurities; El Toro's 2008 comp Welcome to the Club: Early Female Rockabilly added some country and bigger names. By the time 2016 came around it was past time for another great collection, and Girls Gonna Bop more than fits the bill. Compiled by Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne for his reissue label Croydon Municipal, the list of artists chosen runs from the very obscure (Judy Fay, Linda Glover) to those known to rockabilly devotees (Sparkle Moore, Janis Martin), while adding a couple who had some mainstream success in the '50s like Lorrie Collins and Wanda Jackson. There are some some tracks that lean more toward the country side of the equation like Jean Shepard's loping "Jeopardy," and some that lean toward R&B like Ella Mae Morse's "Razzle Dazzle." Most of the record is made up of twangy, roll-up-the-rugs rockers that show off an array of impressive pipes and tough-as-nails, devil-may-care attitudes that would give the toughest hood in town second thoughts about crossing their paths. Find a guy who made a tougher, meaner song than Joyce Green's "Black Cadillac" and you've done some real digging. Good luck spotting a rockabilly cat with as much energy as Lorrie Collins displays on the track "Mercy" or as much sass as the great Wanda Jackson on "Sparkling Brown Eyes." She can make a sweet love song sound like a call to arms. These are only a few examples of the pleasures to be found on Girls Gonna Bop. Drop in anywhere and you're likely to find a hidden gem (like Donna Rae & the Sunbeams' swaggering "Little Fool") or fun novelty (Linda Glover's "Counting Sheep Over You"). Hopefully, it won't be another long wait until another collection like this shows up; it feels like the tip of a rockin' iceberg of forgotten female rockabilly queens. ~ Tim Sendra
