Performer Notes
  • Full title: Havana, Cuba, Ca. 1957: Rhythms & Songs For The Orishas: From The Historic Recordings Of Lydia Cabrera And Josefina Tarafa.
  • Includes liner notes by Morton Marks.
  • Digitally remastered by Pete Reiniger.
  • Havana Cuba ca. 1957: Rhythms & Songs for Orishas features a number of archived recordings from 1957. The songs all feature a style of percussion intended to summon the gods. Given this important bit of information, you're likely to presume that this is both spiritual and tribal music, which, of course, it is. Not exactly crowd-pleasing music. It's rather idiosyncratic, in fact. Not something you entertain your guests with at a party. However, anyone interested in this album's anthropological angle might indeed find this music interesting. And that might just be reason enough to search this out. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Professional Reviews
NAPRA Review (01-02/02, p.70) - "...Ceremonial rhythms...salutes to the orishas, the gods honored by practitioners of Santeria....Intricate rhythmic combinations and impassioned chants..."
