Performer Notes
  • Recorded at Le Terroir Studio, Quebec, Canada, June 19-27, 1984.
  • The debut from these Canadian thrash metal innovators is raw and brutal, bearing little resemblance to the well-oiled machine that emerged years later. Though distinctly different from the refined prog metal of the band's 1989 masterpiece NOTHINGFACE, Voivod's early primal rumblings were part of the initial wave of thrash progenitors that included the likes of Bathory and Venom.
  • With the reissue of this album, Metal Blade pays homage to Snake and company with a three-disc collector's package that includes the remastered WAR & PAIN, along with lo-fi demos and live tracks culled from 1983-84. A third disc includes liner notes, artwork, a video, photos, and computer wallpaper and screensavers. Die-hard fans will be pleased with the homage paid to the early works of Voivod, whose roster would eventually include ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, a longtime aficionado of the group.

The first, roughest and most energetic of all the voivod albums, this classic disc captures the bands early efforts before they went all experimental and progressive. Primitive, over the top 80s thrash at its best (or worse...)

I must assume that if your interested in Voivod's, "War And Pain", then you must know something about real heavy metal. Their debut album way back from 1984 is an undeniable classic. Early Voivod was something completely different, but if you were into bands like Slayer, Venom and Kill 'em All era Metallica, You most likely would like Voivod. "War And Pain" is a brutal record. All the crazy riffs, the thundering bass, nuclear drumblasts and bloodcurdling vo-kills carry you into the land of the Voivod. A warrior vampire-lord with a lust for death. This album is all killer and no filler.
